Florida has no shortage of firearms classes. But not all firearms instructors are created equal.

Buying a handgun is easy. Becoming proficient with it is an entirely different responsibility.

Across Florida, countless programs promise confidence, accuracy, and defensive shooting skills. Unfortunately, a certificate, a few hours on the range, or an expensive pistol does not automatically produce competence.

Valortec Training Academy believes the standard should be considerably higher.

Offered at Volusia County Gun & Hunt Club in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Valortec’s Pistol Defense Fundamentals course delivers professional handgun instruction grounded in decades of law enforcement experience and the scientific principles of marksmanship.

This isn’t another class designed simply to put holes in paper. It’s an investment in understanding your firearm, correcting mistakes, and developing the fundamentals of responsible defensive shooting.

The Valortec Difference: Science, Experience, and Accountability

There are firearms instructors, and then there are professionals who have dedicated their careers to understanding the science behind shooting performance.

Valortec’s training philosophy is driven by Herfel “Boots” Torres, Master Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor, competitive shooter, and author of The Science of Marksmanship: From Tradition to Truth.

With more than 30 years of experience, Torres brings an extensive collection of professional qualifications, including NRA Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor, NRA Training Counselor, GLOCK Instructor, GLOCK MOS Instructor, and other specialized firearms training credentials.

His approach challenges one of the firearms industry’s biggest problems: teaching techniques without explaining why they work.

The Science of Marksmanship examines biomechanics, neuroscience, visual processing, and motor learning to help explain the principles behind shooting performance.

Rather than asking students to blindly repeat traditional techniques, Valortec emphasizes understanding, consistency, and measurable improvement.

Accuracy Is Not Optional When Innocent Lives Are at Stake

In recreational shooting, a missed shot may cost a few points.

In a lawful defensive encounter, a missed shot can have devastating consequences.

Every responsible handgun owner should understand that a projectile does not simply disappear when it misses its intended target.

This is why Valortec places such significant emphasis on accuracy, firearm control, and accountability.

The NRA’s fundamental firearm safety rules reinforce the responsibility to know your target and what lies beyond it.

At Valortec, that responsibility is treated as a central component of serious firearms education.

Owning a firearm gives you a tool. Training develops the competence to handle that responsibility.

Florida Has Plenty of Firearms Classes. Choose the Instructor Who Understands the Science.

A weekend instructor certificate cannot substitute for decades of professional experience.

An expensive handgun cannot compensate for poor fundamentals.

And repeating bad habits does not make them good ones.

Valortec’s instructional philosophy is unapologetic: firearms training should be built on competence, science, professional standards, and accountability—not marketing promises or participation certificates.

For students who expect more from their training investment, Valortec presents a compelling alternative to ordinary firearms instruction.

Don’t settle for simply learning how to fire a handgun. Learn what it takes to become a more knowledgeable, responsible, and capable shooter.

VALORTEC — Train Often. Train Smart. Train Proudly.

Florida has plenty of red dot pistol classes. But learning to find a glowing dot is not the same as learning to shoot accurately.

Anyone can purchase a $500 optic, mount it on a pistol, and call it an upgrade. Unfortunately, expensive equipment cannot correct poor biomechanics, inconsistent trigger control, or inadequate visual processing.

That is precisely why Valortec’s Defensive Red Dot Training stands apart from conventional firearms instruction.

Offered at Volusia County Gun & Hunt Club in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, this specialized program combines professional firearms instruction with the scientific principles behind accurate, consistent, and accountable shooting.

This is not another class about shooting with an accessory. It is about understanding the science behind the shooter.

The Science of Marksmanship: What Makes Valortec Different?

Developed around the instructional philosophy of Herfel “Boots” Torres, Valortec’s Master Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor and author of The Science of Marksmanship: From Tradition to Truth, the academy’s approach challenges conventional firearms training methods.

Torres brings more than 30 years of firearms instruction and competitive shooting experience, supported by extensive law enforcement instructor credentials.

His philosophy is straightforward:

Stop memorizing shooting techniques. Start understanding why they work.

The Science of Marksmanship examines the relationship between biomechanics, neuroscience, visual processing, motor learning, and the physical mechanics of shooting.

Applied to pistol-mounted optics, these principles help explain why shooters struggle to acquire their red dots, why expensive optics cannot correct poor fundamentals, and why repeating the same mistakes does not produce meaningful improvement.

What Will You Learn in Valortec’s Defensive Red Dot Class?

Valortec’s six-hour Defensive Red Dot program goes beyond basic optic familiarization, emphasizing practical understanding and individualized performance correction.

The curriculum addresses:

• Red Dot Acquisition: Understanding visual processing and developing more consistent optic acquisition without constantly searching for the dot.
• Accuracy and Trigger Control: Recognizing fundamental shooting errors and their effects on shot placement.
• Optic Selection, Zeroing, and Maintenance: Understanding sighting principles, equipment limitations, and reliable optic operation.
• Multiple-Target Engagement: Developing visual transitions and maintaining accuracy during supervised exercises.
• Individualized Instructor Feedback: Identifying performance deficiencies and understanding what needs correction.

Students receive direct coaching rather than being left to repeat drills without understanding their mistakes.

The objective is not simply to shoot more rounds. It is to make every round, every correction, and every training session meaningful.

Your Red Dot Cannot Make You Accountable. Training Can.

There is an uncomfortable reality that every defensive handgun owner needs to understand.

A missed shot in a defensive encounter can have consequences far beyond the intended target.

An optic cannot identify innocent bystanders, make responsible decisions, or compensate for inadequate shooting fundamentals.

That responsibility belongs to the individual operating the firearm.

Valortec emphasizes accuracy, responsible judgment, and performance accountability because defensive marksmanship involves considerably more than hitting a target at a recreational range.

This philosophy is what distinguishes serious professional firearms education from simply learning to operate another piece of equipment.

But Valortec’s Defensive Red Dot course offers something that cannot be purchased in an equipment box: a science-driven understanding of how shooting performance works—and why it sometimes fails.

If you’re serious about improving your accuracy, understanding your equipment, and becoming a more responsible handgun owner, this is the training worth investing in.

Your optic does not make you a better shooter. Your training does.
