FIRST Steps Basic Pistol Course The FIRST (Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training) Steps Basic Pistol Course1 is the latest addition to the NRA's training programs for new shooters. It provides hands-on orientation to one specific rifle, pistol or shotgun model in as little as three hours, including a one-hour shooting session on a range. This 3 hour course introduces the student to the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for owning and using a specific model of firearm. The goal of this program is to teach the participant the fundamentals of firearms safety and shooting. Since FIRST Steps programs are action type-specific (only one specific action type of firearm is taught) and teach only the most basic shooting skills, they are not complete courses in the traditional sense of the word. Summary of Course Content:
Tuition - $75.00
Required Equipment:
The NRA Basic Pistol Course1 is designed to give students the basic skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. Through this course, students learn pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, and shooting fundamentals. Basic pistol is a 10 hour course that may be conducted in one all day session or 2 half day sessions. Summary of Course Content:
Tuition - $150.00
Required Equipment:
The Home Firearm Safety Course is a 4 hour course designed to present the basic knowledge, skills, and the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storing of guns in the home. Guns are neither safe nor unsafe by themselves. When people practice responsible ownership and use, firearms are safe. The number of accidental firearms fatalities has dropped 52% between 1967 and 1988, according to National Safety Council survey. This decline is a direct result of the increase and effectiveness of gun safety programs. Summary of Course Content:
Understanding these lessons will enable the students to enjoy the many benefits of gun ownership and participation in shooting activities. This course fits very nicely into civic organizations, church groups, retirement villages, or just a group of folks or relatives who would like to have a class in their own home. (This course does not involve the actual shooting of firearms) Tuition - $75.00
Personal Protection in the Home Course The Personal Protection in the Home Course1 is designed to develop in students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense. PPIH is an 8 hour course that may be conducted in one all day session or 2 half day sessions. Participants must have completed an NRA Basic Firearms course to be eligible. Possession of a firearm is only one aspect of a total home security plan. The necessity of establishing a secured perimeter as a first line of defense of one's residence is paramount, because it will discourage criminal invasion or will provide the homeowner with early earning in the event of an intrusion. Securing measures may include adequate door and window locks, perimeter fences, window grates, ornamental, barred, heavy gauge steel "screen" doors, landscaping that minimizes the ability for a criminal to operate or hide unobserved, outdoor lighting on motion detectors, a family pet that serves in a watchdog role, and possibly an alarmed security system. Getting to know your neighbors and establishing a formal or informal neighborhood watch is advisable. Interior security involves designation of one remote room in the home as the "safe" room. These rooms, usually the master bedroom, serves as the location to which individual family members may congregate in relative safety should a criminal forcibly obtain entry to the residence. The safe room will be fitted with a sturdy, solid core, lockable door, with dead bolt latches on the upper and lower third. Equipment routinely stored in the safe room will include a flashlight, a cellular phone by which to contact police should phone wires be cut, and a secured firearm with ample ammunition. All members of the household should be familiar with the home defense plan. Summary of Course Content:
Tuition - $150.00
